 Delfina Sanchez sits with her granddaughter outside her house in the village of Manabao. Wisps of cloud settle gently on the mountain peaks beyond her home. The air is cool, moist, and scented with the aroma of flowers and freshly brewed coffee. A small, independent coffee buyer, Delfina purchases the finest beans produced by growers in the Cordillera Central, the Dominican Republic’s highest and most extensive mountain range. Delfina’s house is a mere 20 kilometers, as the crow flies, from Pico Duarte, the Caribbean’s highest peak.

The Cordillera Septentrional is the northernmost mountain range in the Dominican Republic. From its ocean-facing slopes you can see where Columbus first landed in the New World. And on those same slopes, an association of small growers near the town of Soliman is producing some of the country’s finest certified organic coffee.
